Jabal al-Nour & Ghar Hiraʾ

Jabal al-Nour & Ghar Hiraʾ

In Makkah, where the earth embraces the sky, Jabal Al-Noor rises majestically, hiding a unique secret among its dark rocks. Here, the Prophet (PBUH)would retreat for solitude, contemplating the Kingdom of Allah, until the lights of revelation shone upon him. On a night in Ramadan, Angel Jibreel (Gabriel) approached him and held him firmly, until he felt the breaths of revelation touch his soul, and said: "Read." It was a decisive moment between darkness and light, marking the beginning of the eternal message. Jabal Al-Noor was not just rocks; it bore witness to the event that changed the world, as the light of truth illuminated it.

Historical Overview

One of the most famous mountains in Makkah, known as Jabal Hira, recently called Jabal Al-Noor, it is located northeast of the Haram, about 4 km away. Jabal Hira is closely linked to the Prophetic biography and the revelation of the first verses of the Quran. When the Prophet (PBUH) approached forty, the signs of prophethood began to appear to him. He would see visions in his sleep, and every vision came true with the clarity of daybreak. The Prophet (PBUH) returned home trembling, entering the presence of his wife Khadijah bint Khuwailid (RA) and shared the news, saying: "I fear for myself." She reassured him: "No, by Allah, Allah will never disgrace you; you maintain kinship ties, bear burdens, help the needy, honor guests, and assist in upholding truth."

Jabal Hira

Jabal Hira is a unique mountain in shape and appearance, its color tending toward black, with a summit resembling a camel’s hump. It rises 642 m above sea level, covering an area of 5.25 km². Historical narrations mention that the Quraysh revered this mountain, celebrating it in their poetry. It is one of the seven mountains from which the Quraysh built the Sacred Kaaba in the fifth year before the Prophethood.

Ghar Hira (Cave of Hira)

Located at the top of Jabal Hira, on its southwest side, it is a gap among stacked rocks, about 3 m long, 1.5–2 m wide, with medium height. Its entrance faces north, and within the cave, a small opening allows a view of the Sacred  Kaaba.

Old Path to the Cave

The old path to the cave began from the southern side of Jabal Al-Noor, with steps carved in later eras from irregular stones. The path starts at the base of the mountain, ascending to the summit, then descends about 20 m, narrowing between rocks until reaching the cave.

New Path to the Cave

In 1445 AH (2024 CE), a new path was prepared, starting from the Hira Cultural District at the foot of Jabal Hira and ending a few meters before the summit. It features beautifully paved steps, security measures, and lighting along both sides of the path.

Events at Jabal Hira in the Prophetic Biography

The Prophet (PBUH)used to worship at Hira before the revelation. At the age of forty, Angel Jibreel descended upon him with the beginning of Surah Al-‘Alaq. Jabal Hira is also associated with the miracle of the splitting of the moon, when it appeared between its two halves.
