Transportation

The transportation system in Makkah is a vital part of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's infrastructure and is overseen by key entities such as the Ministry of Transport and Logistics, the Royal Commission for Makkah City and Holy Sites, and the Makkah Region Development Authority.

Haramain High Speed Railway

The Haramain High-Speed Railway project is the largest public transport project in the Middle East, connecting Makkah and Madinah via a 450 km railway in about two hours, with speeds of up to 300 km/h. The train station in Makkah is located in the Al-Rusifah district, 3.5 km from the Holy Mosque. The project includes five strategic stations in Makkah, Jeddah, King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, King Abdullah Economic City, and Madinah

Makkah Buses

The General Transport Center in Makkah, affiliated with the Royal Commission for Makkah City and Holy Sites, oversees the public bus transport project. The first phase of the project includes 12 routes: 7 for local buses (covering 172 km) and 5 for express buses (covering 103 km). The fleet consists of 400 buses (240 standard and 160 articulated), and the facilities include 4 central stations, 7 bridges, 11 smart intersections, and 438 bus stops.

Trial operations were launched in February 2022, and in October 2023, fully integrated paid services were introduced at a ticket price of 4 SAR, with special packages available for different passenger categories.

Makkah Taxi

Makkah Taxi is a pioneering national project for smart transportation in the Holy Capital. It provides a modern and safe taxi service for pilgrims, residents, and visitors to Makkah via an integrated taxi app for booking and electronic payment, and a direct connection to the transportation control room.

The project reflects the Kingdom's Vision 2030 for quality of life and digital transformation. It achieves economic, technical, and environmental integration through an environmentally friendly hybrid fleet that reduces emissions.

It contributes to solving traffic challenges and improving flow, while meeting community needs and providing sustainable economic value and new job opportunities.

The project relies on quality and efficiency, achieving customer satisfaction, and instilling the values of Makkah hospitality and safety, thus promoting Makkah's global image as an advanced model for smart and sustainable transportation services.

Al Mashaaer Al Mugaddassah Metro Line - (Operates Seasonally)

The Al Mashaaer Al Mugaddassah Metro Line is a modern transportation system that connects the holy sites of Mina, Arafat, and Muzdalifah, operating seasonally during the Hajj period only to meet the high demand for pilgrim movement. The metro provides a fast and safe means of transport, helping reduce congestion and facilitating crowd flow, while organizing pilgrim movement between the sites and enhancing the overall experience of performing the rituals in a comfortable and orderly manner.
