It is one of the most prominent landmarks of the Sacred Monument and a lasting witness to the events of the Day of Arafah. Built in the 2nd Hijri century, the Prophet (PBUH) performed the combined and shortened Dhuhr and Asr prayers in its precincts on the Day of Arafah. The mosque accommodates over 400,000 worshippers and covers an area of 110,000 m², making it the second largest mosque in Makkah after the Grand Mosque, thanks to its major expansion. It features six towering minarets, each 60 meters high, 64 gates, and a sleek rectangular design with shaded courtyards that can host tens of thousands of worshippers.
Masjid Namirah lies along the western boundary of Arafat. Its structure is mostly inside Arafat, with a portion extending into Wadi ‘Uranah — the very place where the Prophet (PBUH) delivered his Farewell Sermon. Inside the mosque, signboards clearly mark the borders of Arafat. The mosque is located approximately 18 kilometers from the Grand Mosque (Al-Masjid Al-Haram) and about 1.5 kilometers from Jabal Al-Rahmah (Mount of Mercy).
The mosque takes its name from Jabal Namirah (Mount Namirah), located west of Wadi ‘Uranah. It is also known by other names such as Masjid ‘Arafah and Masjid Ibrahim.
