The Well of Dhī Tuwā, a relic from pre-Islamic times, is located in the Jarwāl district within the valley of Dhī Tuwā, approximately 900 meters northwest of Masjid Al Ḥarām. Mount Quʿayqʿān rises to the east, overlooking the well, which takes its name from the valley itself.

The Valley of Dhī Tuwā

Dhī Tuwā, a valley within the sacred precincts of Makkah, traces its course from the western slopes of Mount Adhākhir, north of Mount Quʿayqʿān. Its source is the spring of Riʿ al-Luṣūṣ (Thieves’ Spring), now commonly known as Riʿ al-Sadd (Dam Spring) due to its proximity to the modern Fakkh Dam. Flowing between al-Ḥujūn and Riʿ al-Kuhl (the Green Thaniyyah), the valley takes on the name al-ʿUtaybiyyah. Further along, at the site of the Well of Dhī Tuwā, it is called Jarwal. As it skirts the western flank of Mount Kaʿba, it becomes known as al-Tandibāwī—formerly al-Layt—a name derived from the plentiful Tandab trees that once graced its banks. Finally, the valley of Dhī Tuwā merges with the Valley of Ibrahim just below Jabal Thābir al-Zinj (also known as Mount al-Masfalah from the southwest). Today, residential neighborhoods blanket the entire area. The name Dhī Tuwā itself is now primarily associated with the well situated in the Jarwal district.
